ATF: Suspect in Fatal Shooting with Fargo Officer was Allowed to Have Guns :: 02/22/2016
The suspect involved in a fatal shooting with a Fargo police officer was allowed to have guns, even though he is a convicted felon, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Marcus Schumacher reportedly served time for negligent homicide in the 1980s, but according to a North Dakota statute, individuals convicted of a violent felony are allowed to have firearms 10 years after their release.
The 49-year-old Schumacher is suspected of shooting and killing 33-year-old Officer Jason Moszer during a standoff last week. Moszer died the following day. Schumacher was later found dead inside his home.
Moszer was a six-year veteran of the police force and is survived by a wife and two children. The city of Fargo has launched a fundraising site to assist his family.
Meanwhile, Fargo Police Chief David Todd asked the community to not only help Moszer’s family, but to help Schumacher’s family as well.
The chief said Schumacher’s family members were the victims that police were initially responding to in order to protect them from “a dangerous armed person.”
Moszer's funeral will be held Monday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. at Scheels Arena in Fargo.
