Florida Self-Defense: Homeowner holds alleged burglar at gunpoint :: 12/12/2017

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A Port St. Lucie homeowner held a burglar at gunpoint Sunday night until police arrived, investigators said.

A man who lives in the 600 block of NW Fairhaven Drive told police he heard something coming from the family shed and went out to investigate.

When he got outside, Jorge Lopes, 42, came out of the shed with a drill above his head as if he was going to attack the homeowner, police said.

The victim said he drew his firearm and told Lopes to lay on the ground. Lopes did so and the victim held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

"He thought he was going to be attacked and that's why he drew his weapon and told him to get on the ground and luckily no one was hurt in this situation I mean people have the right to defend their property," said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol.

Lopes pried open the door to the shed and took several items and stacked them outside the door of the shed, police said.

Lopes was arrested on charges of burglary of an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief.
