Gun compromise legislation gets final approval in Virginia :: 02/23/2016
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia General Assembly has given final approved to legislation that would allow more concealed-weapon permit holders to legally carry guns in the state.
A compromise hammered out by Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe and top Republicans easily passed the Senate with bipartisan support Monday.
The legislation would expand the number of concealed handgun permit reciprocity agreements Virginia has with other states, allowing more out-of-state permit holders to legally carry guns in Virginia.
It would also prohibit people subject to a protective order from carrying firearms and require police presence at gun shows for voluntary background checks.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's gun-control group has blasted McAuliffe over the deal, saying it makes Virginians less safe.
McAuliffe is expected to sign the legislation into law later this week.
