In 'Bizarro World,' gun laws actually make sense :: 08/09/2014
Last week, I woke up in Bizzaro World. "Deal set for tighter gun laws," The Boston Globe headline read. The article's subhead was even more telling: "Compromise state plan would let police go to court to deny licenses."
I'm sure the good folks of Boston, or just about anyone who has ever visited Beantown, would dispute that characterization. But, I was in town for a National Association of Black Journalists convention, and the day's lead story in the local paper told me I was in a very different place.
The Massachusetts Legislature reached an agreement on a bill that would tighten one of the nation's restrictive gun laws even further. The bill gives the police the power to go to court to keep rifles and shotguns from individuals they think are too dangerous to own them.
And get this. The lawmakers, according to the story, actually rushed to get the bill done in time for the close of their legislative session. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick made note of the progress as he signed a measure aimed at curbing harassment outside of abortion clinics.
