McCarthy Says He Hasn't Given Up On Repercussions For Dems' Gun Sit-In :: 11/29/2016
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he still plans on reprimanding Democrats for their unprecedented gun control protest on the House floor in June.
During the course of the 26-hour sit-in, led by civil rights activist Georgia Rep. John Lewis, Democrats violated a number of rules, including live-steaming video on social media and fundraising on the floor.
Shortly after the event took place, McCarthy and House Speaker Paul Ryan met with the sergeant at arms to review the acts of misconduct and weigh what repercussions were appropriate. The California Republican said reports confirmed there was damage to furniture and mistreatment of floor staff.
While months have passed, McCarthy said Democrats can still expect repercussions for their actions.
“I still have not given up on that,” he told reporters Tuesday. “I think the rules of the floor need to be enforced, in that process, I have not seen action like this in the past but that doesn’t mean that there are not reasons that we can’t do something.”
McCarthy said something needs to be done to assure similar occurrences don’t happen in the furniture.
“You might see a rules package, some new rules on how to deal with the floor for those actions and others,” he continued.
A timeline for when the punishment will be announced is still not in place.
